2020 marks a new decade, which always makes people feel like they’ve stepped into the future. Digital marketing is set to continue to grow as companies look to the internet to promote their businesses, but what trends will define the next decade? Here are some digital marketing trends you might want to look out for in the next year, which promises to be an exciting one for the industry.

Mobile and voice search looks set to grow

The roll-out of 5G spread across the globe in 2019, and in 2020, developing countries like India will be trialing the technology. This could mean that people in even the remotest locations will be relying on the internet for day to day research and tasks, so mobile searches could well shoot up in the next few years. The same goes for voice search. While many forecasters saw technology such as smart speakers as a fad, Alexa and her friends don’t seem to be going anywhere, and by 2022 voice-based shopping is predicted to be worth $40 billion.

Influencers will shape our buying decisions

Despite many countries tightening their rules over influencer marketing, and some minor scandals about influencers selling products they don’t use, people still trust these social media minor celebrities. People trust an influencer more than an advert, so in 2020, prepare to see more brands backing the Insta-famous. After all, it’s cheaper than traditional advertising and according to statistics, it gets results.

Marketing will be tailored to emerging markets

China’s stock market officially opened up to the global financial system in 2020, and with talks of a trade deal with the USA, it is perhaps the biggest emerging market. However, marketing to a new country is always a challenge, so it’s worth using China DR Solutions to create a digital strategy that specifically targets this region if you are planning on selling in this area.

Digital detoxes will make social media marketing harder

While social media use has risen in 2019, a number of issues from fake news to big data have led to large numbers of people cutting down the time they spend on each platform. However, that doesn’t mean the death of social media marketing. Social selling (the process of building relationships to generate sales) is likely to continue to rise, helping to market everything from cars to beauty products. Gen Z favorite Tik Tok is also likely to be popular among social media marketers, with many of the new users coming in from India, an emerging market.

Micro-moments will present new opportunities

Ever had a moment when you realize you need to look something up or thought you might want to buy something, so you’ve reflexively picked up your phone or tablet? Those are micro-moments, times when it’s easiest to catch the consumer’s attention and encourage impulse purchases. In 2020, marketers will be looking at the best ways to capitalize on micro-moments, whether it’s through more personalized content or quicker user journeys, so you can strike at exactly the right second.
